Our Center

The La Casita Verde Child Development Center is located in Highland Park's historic Ziegler Estate, adjacent to the Southwest Museum Metro station. This center serves the local community families with a priority to serve low- to moderate-income families. The La Casita Verde center's curriculum is emergent, incorporating elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM.)

The classroom teachers conduct developmental assessments twice a year that require family participation. It is through these assessments, classroom observations and family interactions that teachers develop a developmentally appropriate and meaningful curriculum for the children.

The center is licensed and regulated by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division (CCLD.)

The Preschool Program

Children may enroll into the preschool program from the age of 30 months to 5 years old. Our program does not require children to independently use the bathroom to enroll in the preschool program. Our curriculum is emergent and strives for a developmentally appropriate environment. We support the child and their family when they are ready to begin the process of potty learning. When a child develops the necessary skills to have a positive and successful potty learning experience, the teachers will collaborate with the child's family to develop a potty learning routine that can be implemented at home and school.

The preschool program has a max capacity of 28 children, with a 9:1 child to teacher ratio. The focus in the preschool classroom is developing social skills, peer interaction and beginning self-help skills. In addition to this focus the classroom also focuses on sparking curiosity and allowing the children to develop the foundations of learning in a meaningful way.

The preschool program is licensed for 28 Children; Lic. 198012751.

 The Infant & Toddler Program

The program enrolls infants and toddlers between the ages of 6 weeks to 30 months old into the infant or toddler room, depending on the infant's stage of development. The infant room has a capacity of 7 children per day with a 4:1 child to teacher ratio. The toddler room has a capacity of 12 children with a 4:1 child to teacher ratio. Infants will transition into the toddler room when they are sturdy walkers at the age of 18 months, and can transition positively into the toddler room routine. The infants are from 0-24 months, and the toddlers are between 18-36 months. The infant and toddler program follows the primary caregiver model, creating a secure and caring environment for the child. The focus of the infant program is to observe and support the development of essential milestones and provide a safe and secure environment that encourages positive and healthy growth.

The infant and toddler program is licensed for 19 children; Lic # 192006521.

 Teacher Qualifications

The La Casita Verde center hires only qualified teachers for both the infant and preschool programs. Teachers are required to have a Child Development Teacher Permit or equivalent education and at least two years of previous experience working for a licensed child care facility. CCLD requires any infant or toddler teacher to have an additional 3 units of college coursework that is specific to infant and toddler care. In addition to the education and experience requirements, there is a comprehensive background check for all employees, volunteers, and extra-curricular staff required by CCLD. This background check is required for all adults that will have continuous access to the children. All staff is required to be fully trained in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and First Aid.

Wait List

Waiting list applications are available throughout the year. Applications can be received in person at the center, faxed or mailed to families looking for child care. Priority for enrollment is given to families waiting for child care in the following order.

  • Siblings of children currently enrolled a classroom.
  • Families who qualify for low-income assistance and financial aid.

Families on the waiting list are informed when there is space available for their child. There are many variables involved in making it possible to predict exactly how long a family may wait for an opening. Therefore, you may be given an approximate month when childcare may be available, but the center reserves the right to change the date of availability if needed, if the children are not ready to move-up to the next room, staffing is inadequate or any other reason that may affect the classroom you are waiting to enroll in to. Nevertheless, the center will try its best to suit your needs.
